AOC and the Glass Cliff Trap

Berlin’s status-panic liberals love a woman with a spine right up until she is handed a job designed to break it.

Donor Mouths, Glass Heels

In the marble halls of professional democracy, they always love a woman with a spine right up until they can park her in a committee room, hand her a poisoned chalice, and ask for miracles with the same mouths that later request discretion. That is the old trick now sold with fresh lipstick: elevate the sharpest woman in the room, load her up with a collapsing brief, and let the men who designed the spill point at her shoes when she slips.

The current fascination around Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has the stale perfume of elite panic and recycled courage. Pundits who once called her reckless now murmur inevitability into microphones. Donors who used to flinch at her name now want a selfie beside her like she wandered out of a policy breakfast and into their wet dream of relevance. Media men and editorialists who could not survive ten minutes of honest oversight are suddenly pitching themselves as allies of the ferocious truth-teller, provided she never says the truth near their budgets, their fundraising lists, or the little backdoor arrangements they call "stakeholder relationships" when they want the room to stay lubricated.

At one Manhattan greenroom last fall, a foundation liberal in a navy suit allegedly praised "bold women" while asking, in the same breath, whether she could be "more disciplined on tone" for the donor circuit. That is the whole racket in one sentence: load the stage, lower the trapdoor, then call it empowerment when she steps forward in heels and everyone pretends the bruising was a leadership exercise.

The consultants are the most obscene part because they talk about women the way men in cheap cologne talk about a body they think they can manage. They adore a woman who can quote Marx, name-check Brecht, and look devastating under committee lights. What they do not adore is a woman who might actually get hold of the machinery, torque the levers, and expose how much of their noble politics is rented virtue with a prestige address and a catering budget. They want a heroine, not a manager. A symbol, not a surgeon. Someone to penetrate the bureaucratic fog, but not cut into the living tissue where the rot sits and oozes.

And the ritual is always the same. A senior party aide, speaking anonymously because he still uses the word "woman" like a legal disclaimer, says the appetite for her rise is "very high" as long as she can absorb the punishment for everyone else’s cowardice. Another aide calls it "gifted staffing" when what he means is: here, carry the knife, smile for the camera, and do not ask why the blade is already warm.

The right, meanwhile, does what it always does: pretends it is terrified of her while being erotically enthralled by the prospect of her failure. Nothing gets them harder than a competent progressive woman being handed a collapsing institution and then blamed for the rubble. They want the humiliation neat, televised, and framed as a morality play about ambition, as if the real crime were not the men who built the trap but the woman who arrived with enough nerve to be blamed in public.

So the question is not whether Ocasio-Cortez is ready. The question is whether the system is ready to stop asking women to perform virtue, absorb the beating, and still thank the room for the opportunity. So far, the answer looks expensive, sweaty, and a little afraid of its own reflection.

That is the part they never put in the press release: the liberal machine does not promote women to share power. It promotes them to make the collapse look moisturized.
